Dr. Idoate is an Associate Professor of Health Promotion and Director of Spirituality, Culture and Health in the College of Public Health at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. She is an enrolled citizen of the Cherokee Nation, and a direct descendent of Nanyehi Ward, who was known for being both a warrior and a peacemaker in negotiating understandings between Settlers and the Cherokee People. Dr. Idoate is the great-granddaughter of a teacher, granddaughter of an artist, and the daughter of a nurse and a builder. She stands on these shoulders as she works to construct ways to blend Western and Indigenous science to promote localized Indigenous health innovations in community-based settings.

Dr. Idoate’s active research centers on indigenous health and education in medical humanities, workforce development and community-driven social innovation. She has a PhD in Preventive and Societal Medicine, MA degrees in Spanish Language and Culture & Christian Spirituality, a graduate minor in Native American Studies and a graduate certificate in Maternal and Child Health. Dr. Idoate enjoys collaborating across disciplines and cultures. She specializes in indigenous research methods and works in partnership with public schools, non-profit organizations, academic institutions, communities, and tribes to promote health and wellness. She appreciates time and space to play, pray, wonder and wander.
